Tips & TricksThis page is where I share some computer tips and shortcuts and the occasional story or article we can laugh about. I also do 3-hr workshops on tips & tricks in the different programs. These workshops are very well received as they save you a lot of time and make you more productive.
Excel:Need to enter today's date? Try ctrl+; in a cell. The date is static, meaning it will not change. If you need a date that changes over time, type =today() . Outlook:Have you ever met a new contact from the same company as one of your current contacts? Select/highlight the current contact. Then click on the Actions menu. Choose New Contact from Same Company and it will give you a new contact with the business information already entered from the old contact card. Word:This one is worth its weight in gold and works in PowerPoint as well. Have you ever wanted to type some regular text within a bulleted or numbered list? For example:
At the end of "San Diego", instead of hitting Enter, try Shift+Enter . That key combination will drop you to the next line without creating another bullet or number. When you want the next number or bullet, just press Enter. PowerPoint:Showing charts in PowerPoint? Don't bring them in from Excel. Create them in PowerPoint. That way you can animate the chart or diagram and bring them into your presentation piece by piece making them easier for your audience to understand. I can show you how. Project:When you enter a new task, type the task name and duration. Don't manually enter start and/or finish dates. That creates a constraint on the task you don't really want and will prevent your project from reacting correctly to schedule changes. Office 2007:Yes, your old keyboard shortcuts work, but here's a way to find some new ones. Press the Alt key. You'll see letters appear representing each tab. Type one of the letters (for example H for Home) and you’ll see keys you can type to activate ribbon features. Press Alt again and the shortcuts disappear. Have a tip or story to share?
